Clapton Square Flat
About this project
Situated on a classic London Georgian square, this ground floor apartment sits within a Georgian townhouse and was designed as a sanctuary for a young music manager, who travels regularly, and her four cats. The interior walls of the property needed to be fully reconditioned, along with soundproofing throughout all the floors. Joel co-designed a bespoke bed with Joe Elwood of Six Dots Design, crafted in handmade aluminium with a surrealist influence that anchors the space. This material language continues through the joinery, with organic handles, imperfect ball finials and refined detailing across wardrobes with integrated lighting, mirrored dressing areas and height-adjusted pull-down rails for ease of use, thus creating surrealist meets Regency in the bedroom. Rooted in the architecture of the building, the scheme layers Regency-inspired furniture with obscure antiques and Brutalist pieces, creating contrast and depth. Pink limewash walls provide a soft, shifting backdrop that changes with the light throughout the day. A bespoke red “bancat” was created, in collaboration with Colours of Arley, offering a playful yet considered space for the cats to retreat. Collected artworks, natural textures and tonal colour pairings bring cohesion, resulting in a calm, cultured, open space designed for both function and nourishing escape.
